Introduction

astelloy C-22 (UNS N06022) strips represent a versatile austenitic nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy engineered for outstanding resistance to uniform and localized corrosion in mixed industrial chemicals. With high chromium content (20-22.5%) for oxidizing media protection and molybdenum plus tungsten for reducing environments, these corrosion-resistant alloy strips maintain integrity in aggressive conditions including wet chlorine, oxidizing acid chlorides, seawater, brine solutions, formic acid, acetic acid, and ferric/cupric chlorides.

Available in annealed condition with excellent ductility and fabricability, Hastelloy C-22 strips resist grain-boundary precipitates in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ), enabling as-welded use without post-weld heat treatment.

Material Composition and Properties

Hastelloy C-22 is primarily composed of nickel, with significant additions of chromium, molybdenum, and iron. It also contains tungsten and cobalt, further enhancing its corrosion-resistant properties. Key attributes of Hastelloy C-22 strips include:

  • Superior Corrosion Resistance: Highly resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in both oxidizing and reducing environments.

  • High Thermal Stability: Maintains mechanical integrity even at elevated temperatures.

  • Excellent Fabricability: Easily formed, welded, and machined for a variety of industrial uses.

  • Chemical Inertness: Performs well in harsh chemical conditions, including acid processing environments.

FAQs:

1.What is Hastelloy C-22 and why is it used for strips?

Hastelloy C-22 (UNS N06022) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten superalloy prized for its unmatched corrosion resistance in oxidizing and reducing conditions, making the strip form perfect for fabrication into gaskets, liners, bellows, and custom components.

2.How does Hastelloy C-22 compare to C-276?

C-22 offers better resistance to oxidizing media (higher Cr content) and similar or superior pitting/crevice performance in many chloride and wet chlorine environments.

3.What are the key corrosion resistance benefits?

It excels against pitting, crevice attack, stress corrosion cracking, wet chlorine, ferric/cupric chlorides, acetic/formic acids, and mixed chemical solutions.

4.What temperature range is suitable?

Typically -300°F to 1650°F (-184°C to 900°C), though avoid prolonged exposure above ~1250°F to prevent phase formation.

5.Is it weldable without post-weld treatment?

Yes — excellent weldability with minimal risk of grain-boundary precipitates in the HAZ.

6.Are custom sizes available?

Yes, industrial-grade Hastelloy C-22 strips can be supplied in various thicknesses, widths, and coils to meet specific project requirements.
